Little is know about the history of these majestic islands owing to the simple ways of her people. Completely detached from major land masses, these islands were virtually unknown to the rest of the world until the latter part of the 20th century.
Arab travelers sailing to the Far East choose these islands as a port of call during the 12th century to replenish their supply of water and discovered its abundant riches from the sea; especially money cowry shells which was then used as a currency on the East Coast of Africa.
The presence of Portuguese in the Indian Ocean brought the country under their rule for a brief period in the 16th century. Disturbances from the Malabar Coast of India led to an alliance and the establishment of political relationships with Ceylon. This continued throughout Sri Lankan, Dutch and British colonial periods until she became independent in 1965.
In early 1970's Europeans discovered this lost paradise and soon it became a world renowned destination for holiday makers. The industry that started with very basic facilities soon developed into a luxury holiday destination.
